Causes of hair loss


There are various reasons for hair loss  and some of the main causes are mentioned below:

  1. Unhealthy diet – Today’s hectic lifestyle do not make people eat the right kind of food and hence the body does not get enough protein, vitamins and minerals to sustain hair growth.  

  1. Hair treatments and styling – Bleaching, hair coloring, straightening, perming causes damage to the hair and can cause irritation of the scalp and damages hair follicle that results in traction alopecia.  

  1. Androgentic alopecia – Is the most common cause for hair loss among adults, caused by combination of factors including hormones androgens and genetics.  

  1. Diseases / health conditions – People suffering from thyroid or diabetes can suffer from hair loss.    Hormonal imbalances that occur during polycystic ovary syndrome can cause hair loss in teen girls as well as in adult women.

  1. Medications – Some medications are known to cause hair loss.  

  1. Alopecia areata – This is an auto immune skin disease causing hair loss, in which the hair follicles are damaged by persons own immune system. This disease often begins in childhood and both male and female can get it.  


  1. Disruption of the hair growth cycle - Pregnancy, delivery, surgery and trauma can cause temporary hair loss.
