Causes of hair loss

1. Hair treatments and styling – Chemical treatments such as hair coloration, straightening, perming can cause damage that may make the hair break off or fall out temporarily. Some hair styles create irritation on the scalp that results in a condition called traction alopecia. This condition can be permanent if the style is worn for a long time and it damages hair follicle.

2. Androgenetic alopecia – It is the most common cause for hair loss among adults, caused by combination of factors including hormones androgens and genetics. It also can occur in people who take steroids like testosterone.

3. Insufficient nutrition – Some people with eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia are tend to lose their hair because their body isn’t getting enough protein, vitamins and minerals to sustain hair growth. Also some athletes face this problem because they are more likely to develop iron deficiency anaemia.

4. Medications – Chemotherapy treatment for cancer is well known cause for hair loss. Acne medicines like isotretinoin and lithium, diet pills that contain amphetamines can also lead to hair loss.

5. Alopecia areata – This is an auto immune skin disease causing hair loss, in which the hair follicles are damaged by persons own immune system. This disease often begins in childhood and both male and female can get it. Alopecia areata can progress to complete hair loss.

6. Disruption of the hair growth cycle- some major events for example pregnancy, delivery of baby, surgery and trauma can cause temporary hair loss.

7. Diseases / health conditions – Diabetes or thyroid diseases causes hair loss as they interfere with hair production. Hormonal imbalances that occur during polycystic ovary syndrome can cause hair loss in teen girls as well as in adult women.
